The Great Deluge is an absolute tour de-force on one of the most shameful episodes in modern American history. I was reluctant to buy the book worried that (having been written by a history professor) it might not have the narrative flow to bring the various events and stories to life. I need not have worried, as Brinkley's writing style would do justice to Erik Larson and, on occasions, reminded me of Larson's own Isaac's Storm. This book should be required reading in our schools and in State and local government. It speaks to the power of Mother Nature, the incompetence of the administration in Washington DC (especially, Chertof at Homeland Security and Michael Brown at FEMA) and Mayor Nagin in New Orleans. It also tells the heroic stories of courage and survival by ordinary citizens, both from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast - and of those who came to the region to lend their help. Peter Smith

I'm a survivor of the hell of the Dome and I wrote "Left to Die-A first-hand account of life in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina." After seven years of nightmares, I'm finally able to read accounts of the events without becoming an emotional wreck. It was with enthusiasm that I read "The Great Deluge."I was surprised to find for the most part an accurate rendering of the facts. It did gloss over some events but that is expected due to formatting restraints.I liked the fact that it chronicled the whole Gulf Coast and not just New Orleans. The way the author explains each vignette is great for the reader unfamiliar with New Orleans, its politics or quirky ways. The main players were people I knew and Mr. Brinkley accurately portrays them. You hardly ever hear about the people with a plan. And it is rarer if they use it. The coastal smaller parishes got it and prepared for the Big One. Likewise heroes are seldom acknowledged. Big or small the writer took time to point out some of these unsung champions. The book is well written but does ramble at times. The author flip-flops back and forth on the timeline. The photos were good but were poorly placed. Still it is a book worth reading.I agree with Bishop Paul Morton... Nagin is "A white man in black skin." His aspirations were to rise up the political ladder. When he told Bush we were all evacuated, he left us to die. I'm surprised he was never called to account for his lack of planning and action. So for an accurate account of those horrible days up and down the Gulf Coast, this is the book for you.

I am an avid reader of all books about Hurricane Katrina, and of the volumes I have read, The Great Deluge has been the best read. It really gives points of view of all parties involved, and even though the length initially worried me, I couldn't put it down. For those of us who lived near and through this storm and its effects, this book is the real story and puts to rest a lot of rumors that have circulated for the ten years since the event. This was a catastrophic natural disaster of monumental proportions, and Douglas Brinkley brings all of the elements to the surface for you the reader to see and experience. It could well serve as a textbook for the study of this storm.

Perhaps it’s because my parents lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast during Katrina - but had evacuated to Jackson, MS before the hurricane hit - or perhaps it’s because of my long history with the city of New Orleans, but by the time I read this book, Katrina and all her related circumstances were firmly seared into my memory. I do admit I didn’t know (or remember) how woefully unprepared New Orleans and the surrounding areas were for the event; nor did I know of the hundreds of angels who worked tirelessly to save people. But I have to say that after a while, the story-after-story narrative grew tiresome. I mean no disrespect to the book itself, just that it is told dispassionately and somehow I wanted more from it. I guess this points to the fact that this is a history book, not an opinion piece. If you want the former, you’ll be satisfied. If you want the latter, you won’t be.The bottom line though is how do you write words that tell the story of Katrina? Words fail. Only emotion works.

This is an excellent book. I keep up with the news, so I knew damage wise Katrina was bad and all the TV footage was showing just how overwhelming it was. It's a miracle there were no epidemics of cholera or typhoid from people wading in that water and having to live and sleep in those polluted conditions. Not to mention the fever epidemics that accompany standing, putrid waters, high temperatures and breeding mosquitoes. The political shenanigans were totally ridiculous and unforgivable. FEMA needs to be torn apart and begun over from scratch. I never thought creating one master agency to oversee all the agencies was really smart. Each agency has it's own way of working and totally different objectives. Each needs to be responsible in it's own right for it's own specialty work. Instead they fight among each other for control and things get left undone until everything is out of hand. Why can't FEMA get it's act together on spot. If there is an F5 tornado with no warning everybody in the area gets together and gets started with rescue, food, water, supplies, and shelters. FEMA sneaks in on the coat tails of the local, state, regional, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Church Volunteers. They have not cleaned up their act yet. The job they performed in Superstorm Sandy wasn't any better. They can blame that on racism or poorly trained or unprofessional firemen and EMS. Nor could they dump on poor well meaning local and state officials who did their jobs. They coped when hit with the unexpected too. FEMA needs to clean up and get their act together. I am glad I read this book. There is a lot of food for thought in it. Who are we voting for? What is their true past record? Will they truly work in our best interests?

European Intellectual History from Rousseau to NietzscheBy Frank M. Turner

One of the most distinguished cultural and intellectual historians of our time, Frank Turner taught a landmark Yale University lecture course on European intellectual history that drew scores of students over many years. His lectures—lucid, accessible, beautifully written, and delivered with a notable lack of jargon—distilled modern European history from the Enlightenment to the dawn of the twentieth century and conveyed the turbulence of a rapidly changing era in European history through its ideas and leading figures.

Richard A. Lofthouse, one of Turner’s former students, has now edited the lectures into a single volume that outlines the thoughts of a great historian on the forging of modern European ideas. Moreover, it offers a fine example of how intellectual history should be taught: rooted firmly in historical and biographical evidence.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I'd give this a 3.5/5, but it's incredibly well-known and well-reviewed already so I'll keep this one short. This is a very sweet, fairy tale inspired piece of shortish fiction set in the town of Wall and in Faerie. In Wall there is, well, a Wall that divides the regular world from Faerie and there's a gap in the wall here that is usually guarded. Rarely there is a market at the gap in the Wall with magical items and the townspeople mingle slightly with the inhabitants of Faerie and this fairy tale type story of seeking a falling star who turns out to be a girl, at least in Faerie, ensues.I'll just note that I "read" this by listening to it in audiobook form. The audio book for this, at least the version I listened to, is read by Neil Gaiman, the author of the book. He's an excellent narrator and it's nice to hear the book how the author envisioned it.

I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust. The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book. Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.

I loved the movie so much that i bought this book and found that it is a much more adult fairy tale than the film. A lot was changed to adapt the book to the screen, but the overall tone was very similar. There was more sex and more blood and guts, but it was fun to read and I am glad I bought it.

I really liked this book. I guess I was ruined a bit for Neil Gaiman since I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane before any other of his works. I think about that story all the time. It still resonates with me months after I read it. This story feels similar to me. Tristan will be with me for a long time. I also agree with Neil Gain an on the power of fairy tales or myths or whatever you want to call them. A lot of them have been sanitized over the years from the original stories. Original issue fairy tales were much more grim to make a point.I do not like everything Neil Gaiman writes but the stories I do like are so profound and moving that they stick with me for quite a while. Stardust is one of those.

Magnificent story by author AND magnificent story teller, Neil Gaiman. I honestly have never fallen in love with a story like this until now. I am over the moon about it (so to speak), It is read by the author and that is a treat for the listening audience as he is delivering it in the way it was meant to be.I have listened to this in a car with others, and on my own now quite a few times because there is so much detail in the story-telling and it is pleasant to hear.I had seen the movie Stardust, related to this story it is, but never had a real interest in the movie because (I know now) of how it was portrayed. Although it has helped me visualize some scenes in the audio.Best ever story...well, what can I say...other than...this story I highly recommend for anyone with an interest in fantasy and faerie stories...it is ONEGOODSTORY!

After seeing the movie when it first came out and then buying it when it came out on DVD/BluRay and found out it was a book first, I had to get it. I wanted it in Hard Back as I am huge reader and have a large library and prefer to have them in Hardback form as they last longer. The book did not disappoint. The movie was excellent and the book is even better and am super happy w/ it.I have read several book by Neil Gaiman and this is by far one of the best if not the Best Novel he has ever written. Such a great story and for those romantics out there you will really love this book, as it shows that anyone can find love in even the most remote of places and really teach what love is, etc. Enjoy!

I love this book so much in fact that I own it in several different formats and have read and/or listened to it in all. I first got the audiobook, but sometimes you miss things while listening and I was curious have some things were spelled, so I got the kindle version as well. Then I wanted it on the bookshelf both for myself and in the hopes that one of my children will get curious and pull it down when the time is right. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a little magic and sparkle in their life.

Obviously it's difficult not to compare a book with the movie. There are some major differences, some good and some bad. The actual story is classic and unique, most certainly an excellent read. My biggest issue however is the lack of character development with our female lead and the fact that there is absolutely no chemistry between the two. It's a fairly straightforward story. Boy goes on journey, becomes a man, and of course he gets the girl in the end.

From the Inside Flap

"There is nobody better than Angus Deaton to explain why our lives are longer, healthier, and more prosperous than those of our great-grandparents. The story he tells is much more than an inexorable march of progress--it has also been unequal, uneven, and incomplete, and at each step, politics has played a defining role. This is a must-read for anybody interested in the wealth and health of nations."--Daron Acemoglu, coauthor ofWhy Nations Fail"At once engaging and compassionate, this is an uplifting story by a major scholar."--Paul Collier, author ofThe Bottom Billion"Magisterial and superb."--William Easterly, author of The White Man's Burden"The Great Escape tells the two biggest stories in history: how humanity got healthy and wealthy, and why some people got so much healthier and wealthier than others. Angus Deaton, one of the world's leading development economists, takes us on an extraordinary journey--from an age when almost everyone was poor and sick to one where most people have escaped these evils--and he tells us how the billion still trapped in extreme poverty can join in this great escape. Everyone who wants to understand the twenty-first century should read this book."--Ian Morris, author of Why the West Rules--for Now"Deaton's account of global advances in health is magisterial. It is especially convincing in disentangling economic progress from technological growth as sources of health improvements. A very big story, this book should affect the way we think about human development and the role of science and science-based government programs. The language is modest and graceful, the use of evidence compelling, and the illustrations highly attractive."--Samuel Preston, University of Pennsylvania"This factual, sober, and very timely book deals with issues surrounding the higher incomes and longer lives enjoyed by an increasing proportion of the world's population. It assesses improvements in conditions that would have seemed almost a fantasy for people living only a few generations ago. Deaton's arguments, written in an elegant and accessible style, are powerful and challenge conventional opinions."--Branko Milanovic, author ofThe Haves and the Have-Nots"This splendid book discusses how, in the last two hundred fifty years, large numbers of people have achieved levels of well-being that were previously available only to a few individuals, and how this achievement has given rise to equally unprecedented inequalities. Unique in its focus and scope, exceptional knowledge and coherence, and careful argumentation,The Great Escape is highly illuminating and a delight to read."--Thomas Pogge, Yale University

Insightful book about the global rise of living standards during the industrial era. Charts a path between the political left and right on where the data supports inferences on economic growth, health and wellbeing, and inequality. Deaton also generally reflects a recognition that economics often serves best by obtaining and analyzing data to demonstrate the impact of particular policies, but that actual policy choices really often reflect considerations of norms and values that cannot be determined by the data alone. However, I agree with many other reviewers that the final section on the ineffectiveness of international aid is a mismatch from the rest of the book. It is the least data-centered of the sections and the most like a one-sided persuasive essay. I think he raises a number of valid concerns and considerations about the efficacy of international aid as it is conducted, but I fail to be convinced by his seeming conviction that efforts to reform how aid is conducted would be fruitless. He comes off as a person who has become deeply disillusioned by development aid and can no longer see the legitimacy of any arguments in its favor. However, his even-handedness and open-mindedness about other economic matters in other areas of the book does mean that I am more willing to fully consider his arguments on this issue than I might have been from someone who had not demonstrated such qualities on other issues.

2015 Nobel prizewinner in Economics - Conversational writing style with enough research background to satisfy experts. This addresses the biggest issue of our time in money & inequality. Deaton has been studying this for more than 25 years. I have been studying this topic for 4 years for a local non-partisan civic organization. If I have one recommendation to read on this topic it would be this book. It lays out the facts and issues I have gleaned from a myriad of sources over the past few years.

This is clearly the most insightful book I've read for sometime. In contrast to so much we read today, this book is optimistic about social and economic progress. It's policy recommendations for developed countries are largely hurried and not very well justified -- all except for one, and that one is very important. He makes a very strong, fact based claim that foreign aide as we think of it is largely wasted. Amelioration of world poverty is just not feasible given the infrastructure of the countries that need it most. Clearly, just writing checks doesn't do it, he claims, despite the good intentions those accompanying those checks. But he doesn't advocate doing nothing. He just advocates a carefully administered program that helps underdeveloped countries, but only if they help themselves first.

Some great economists, which we used to know only through very formal papers, are proving to be good writer. Among them, Deaton excels. It brings very good stories with an exposition that we feel like reading a Tolstoi of Science. He knows how to tell good stories, which any scientific writing should search, and which involves concepts and notions that evolve. There some impressing exposition on Wealth and Health, on Incone inequality within the USA, on income inequality in the world, as well as on some attempted remedies. Worth Reading for economists and non-economists

Has the human race made progress since the days when all our lives were nasty, brutish, and short? Some might think this question patently silly, since it would appear to answer itself. But Angus Deaton finds in it a point of entry into his inquiry on “health, wealth, and the origins of inequality,” the subtitle of his ambitious new book. He is in no doubt that humanity has progressed, not steadily but by fits and starts — and continues to do so to this day. “Today,” he writes, “children in sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to survive to age 5 than were English children born in 1918 . . . [and] India today has higher life expectancy than Scotland in 1945.”In The Great Escape, Deaton, a veteran professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton, explores inequality — between classes and between countries — with a detailed statistical analysis of trends in infant mortality, life expectancy, and income levels over the past 250 years. He concludes that the large-scale inequality that plagues policymakers and reformers alike in the present day is the result of the progress humanity has made since The Great Divergence (between “the West and the rest”) since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. “Economic growth,” Deaton asserts, “has been the engine of international income inequality.”No argument there: Deaton is far from alone in this belief. Other scholars have written extensively about this topic in recent years. A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, by Gregory Clark, is just one example.Late in the 18th Century, the countries of Northern Europe and North America on the one hand and those of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America on the other hand were not that far apart as measured by the available indicators of health and income. Deaton cites “one careful study [that] estimates that the average income of all the inhabitants of the world increased between seven and eight times from 1820 to 1992.” However, that average obscures a harsh reality. The ever-quickening rate of change in “the West” since 1760 or so has widened the gap between (and within) countries to an extreme degree. Deaton terms the freedom from destitution and early death that so many of us now enjoy “The Great Escape,” taking his title from the 1963 film of that name about a massive escape of prisoners from a German P.O.W. camp in World War II.Only now is the gap closing between the rich nations and China and India (by far the world’s two biggest countries, with nearly 40 percent of the planet’s population and half the world’s poor). Deaton doesn’t consider a bright future for all a certainty, not by any means, in view of global climate change and the ever-present threat of killer pandemics. But, assuming the species continues to thrive, there is sufficient data available now to have some confidence that the gross inequality now existing among nations will not persist forever. After all, five sub-Saharan African countries are now growing their economies faster than China’s.However, that misleading factoid ignores the outsize role that China has played in “the Great Escape” globally. Deaton notes, as have other observers, that “the number [of] people in the world living on less than a (2005) dollar a day fell from about 1.5 billion in 1981 to 805 million in 2008 . . . [This] decline in numbers is driven almost entirely by the Chinese growth miracle; if China is excluded, 785 million people lived on less than a dollar a day in 1981 compared with 708 million in 2008.” (This reality is one of the principal reasons why Paul Polak and I insist in The Business Solution to Poverty that traditional methods to end poverty have largely failed. After all, China’s methods were hardly traditional!)In the course of exploring the historical record of growing inequality on the world stage, Deaton delves deeply into the role of foreign aid (officially, Overseas Development Assistance, or ODA) and finds it comes up short. ”You cannot develop other countries from the outside with a shopping list for Home Depot, no matter how much you spend,” he writes. With the exception of outside interventions in public health programs — including such breakthroughs as the eradication of smallpox and the near-success with polio — Deaton finds that foreign aid has done more harm than good. He argues that where the conditions for development are present, outside resources are unnecessary. Where they’re absent, ODA entrenches local elites, distorts the local economy, and discourages local initiative. The author insists that “the record of aid shows no evidence of any overall beneficial effect.”But that’s only part of the story. In 2012, ODA totaled about $136 billion. Throw in another $30 billion or so from NGOs, and total outside assistance comes to under $200 billion annually. However, net resource transfers from developing countries to rich countries are well in excess of $500 billion annually. (Transfers reached a peak of $881 billion in 2007, fell with the Great Recession, but are rising again.) Quite apart from the fact that an estimated 70 percent of “foreign aid” is actually spent on products and services from donor nations, ODA merely puts a dent in the huge disadvantage that poor countries suffer as a result of lopsided trade policies and prevailing political and commercial imbalances. In any case, just one factor in those resource flows — remittances from overseas residents of poor countries to their families back home — are twice as large as ODA.The Great Escape is a worthy effort from a senior scholar whose wide-ranging studies have led him to big-picture conclusions. Policymakers and practitioners should be listening carefully.

I learned a lot from this book. I wish the author had made it a little less graph heavy, but I liked that he thoroughly investigated all sides of his arguments. It's made me contemplate whether my service abroad was making a difference, or if I was part of the problem. I'm glad that this book was able to awaken me to that.

Review
This book is clear and concise, gives adequate references and exercises, it summarizes the symbols and displays clear, legible, and informative illustrations. Nelson s obvious experience in lecturing on solar cells has made this book a most useful and recommendable reading --Hans J Queisser, Max-Planck-Institute of Solid-State Research

Photovoltaics will play an increasingly important role in a future low-carbon energy economy. Jenny Nelson has provided a splendidly clear, concise and readable account of the basic semiconductor physics of the solar cell, complete with student exercises and solutions. In the two fascinating final chapters, she takes her readers beyond the limit of performance of the present-day crystalline silicon cell, descibing advanced design concepts that could provide greatly improved efficiency. Warmly recommended to all who want to know how this beautiful technology really works --Mary Archer, Cambridge University

This book is more encyclopedic, with clear figures and broad scope. It does a good job of clarifying the fundamental issues and is a less advanced text. It is, therefore, probably more approachable and more useful to the general reader --Physics Today
